Docent information & application
What is a docent?
Our docents are trained volunteers whose primary responsibility is to interpret the Pound House Farmstead for our visitors. They guide tours, host stations for school groups, give talks, serve at information stations, and answer questions. Docents are the ambassadors for the Pound House Farmstead vision: a living depiction of early life in the Texas Hill Country, providing historical education, a destination point for visitors and a gathering place for the community.
Volunteer Commitment:
A minimum of 36 hours of service per year. Shifts are 4 hours long.
What does docent training involve?
Docent training consists of a general introduction meeting and guided tour, at which time volunteers will be provided information. Following the introduction, volunteers are required to attend an informational session in which we will cover general responsibilities and opening & closing procedures. These are scheduled throughout the year. Once the volunteer has attended both the introduction and the informational sessions, they will give a mock-tour to staff. Any docent is always welcome to shadow another for training or for enrichment.
Who is a good candidate for docent training?
Docents should be 16 yrs or older, outgoing and well spoken.
Anyone with an interest in history and a desire to represent Dripping Springs’ heritage is encouraged to participate. We encourage you to invite like-minded friends to take docent training with you! It’s a lot of fun and a great way to spend time with people who enjoy being a part of the Pound House Farmstead’s programs. There is no expectation that you have previous experience. All you need is a healthy curiosity and a willingness to learn. It is easy and fun!
What is the cost of training?
Training is FREE! You are even encouraged to wear a period costume, supplied by you, should you like to really engage our visitors! Costumes can often be put together using items from your own closet or a local second-hand shop!
